For over 30 years, President Porfirio Díaz held a dictatorship-like rule over the people of Mexico. His decision to run for reelection in 1910 sparked controversy among the lower and middle classes who were primarily in disagreement with the economic disparity between themselves and the rich. Small uprisings to overthrow Díaz eventually grew into a widespread rebellion lasting for 10 years. Consequently, the fight for social and land reform from Díaz led to the changes in structure of Mexico's economy, government, and society in the latter of the Mexican Revolution.
